Debit cards

Foreign nationals can open debit cards on the Visa and Mastercard networks at most South African banks. Credit cards are generally not issued to foreigners without local credit history.

Deposits (savings accounts)

Fixed and notice deposits in ZAR are available to foreign nationals on the same terms as residents.

Not available to foreigners

Unsecured loans, home loans, vehicle finance, instalment plans and leasing are generally only available to South African residents (citizens or permanent residence holders).

Good to know

Online account opening is often unavailable to foreigners — an in-branch visit is usually required. For larger amounts the bank may request additional documents. Confirm exact requirements with the specific bank.
